These days if you type the word roof in google you will get millions of results for that keyword. Google is the new and improved way of researching and studying tool. I’ve noticed yellow pages has been loosing weight since internet has improved its capability.

If you think you are in need of a new roof or have an emergency, you can either look for a roofing company in yellow pages, page number 1234 or search it on the internet with more specific and direct search results. Google will list all the companies in your area and yellow pages will list all the companies by alphabetic order. Lets say you phoned few companies and requested a quote for a new roof. Next day you have three estimates in front of you and i am sure they all have a different cost in mind. What is the right thing to do at this point? First of all read all the estimates one by one and understand what is being offered and for how much. Second of all is the type of material being offered what you had in mind? If you are not sure about any of the estimates feel free to phone the company and get the answers you are looking for. Chances are there will be an expensive, mid-range and a cheaper one. It is your right to ask for proof of insurance which you should always ask for that. Not just a liability insurance, you should ask for a wsib insurance as well. Also to know who you are dealing with, ask for Master Business Licence to confirm that this is a real company registered in Ontario and not some flyby roofer trying to make quick cash. The final decision is always yours and never give deposit unless you have identified the company and made sure they exist. Ask for receipt if you do give a deposit and a deposit should not exceed over 25% of the total cost.
Hiring a registered and insured roofing contractor is always a best choice to protect yourself, your home and you also send a strong message to the roofing contractors that you are aware and you wont be fooled.

If you were to search for reviews about the company using  the internet, you will be able to browse any and every review that was made about that roofing company. Always be money wise and know who you are dealing with.

We are fully insured and registered in every possible way to protect you, our staff and to avoid the unthinkable.

As we all know roofing is a seasonal trade and there is a high demand for it. A poor maintained roof will always cause problems if the problems are not solved from the root. Where do we start to get things right for your new roof? Make sure they are insured to protect yourself first thing.

Choosing the right roofing contractor who will honor his work and his word is a homework for the homeowners to study. There are many details that needs to be taken to a consideration.  For example commercial liability insurance is required for any contractor to perform work in or around your house to protect you from any damage or failure during or after the work was performed. This will cover your home, your vehicles and any other details that belongs to you. WSIB is a must for any roofing contractor to work under all the safety regulations and rules for safer work environment for all the employees. This coverage will protect all the employees and their families from injuries or even fatalities if there will be one. There are safety officers driving around and paying a surprise visit to random contractors while they are working to examine the safety standards and if not met to warn or fine them thousands of dollars for not working under the safety act. All the workers should be wearing steel-toed boots and tied down while working on the roof. Did you know that if a contractor gets injured at your house while working and does not have insurance do you know who is liable for that??? You, the homeowner who hired the contractor. Always check for commercial liability and wsib insurance certificate before hiring a roofing contractor.

Roofing is a dangerous trade and chances of survival from a two-story home is pretty slim, don’t you think?  You might get a cheaper estimate from them but that is why it is so cheap, because they do not have to pay for insurance.

Having milder winters are good and bad if you ask me. Why is it good if you ask; first of all there isn’t a big load of snow sitting on your roof and your furnace is not working day and night to keep your house warm. A roof that is due for a replacement isn’t capable of shrinking in cold temperatures as much as a new roof. Shingles do shrink and expand when there is a change in the temperature. During summer shingles do expand and after ten or fifteen years of expanding and shrinking causes major wear and tear. If you take a closer look at your roof , you can see the lines are starting to appear more and more before the curling begins.

If you ask why the milder winters are bad for your roof; the answer is simple. The shingles are not designed to stay under the direct heat  from the sun. Winter is a good time for them to cool of but they have no break from the sun, it will eventually start to curl up and you would need to replace your roof more often.

A year ago just before the weather got warmer we faced a wind storm that damaged a lot of homes in different parts of the town. That is a perfect example for unpredictable weather. The shingles were not ready to expand and bound properly before the wind took them for a ride. For two months straight we were doing repairs in different parts of the town. Majority of the roofs were in rough shape and they should have been replaced previous year but replacing a roof can be expensive and homeowners should be prepared for the necessary repair costs.

It is highly recommended to hire a professional roofing contractor in your area to inspect your roof before and after winter. Age of the roof does not necessarily mean that it will protect you mother nature.

We offer free roofing inspections in Ottawa, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Orleans and Greely Ontario.

Where should i begin?

As we all know timberline is a brand if shingle manufacturer like iko, crc, bp, certenteed or owens corning. There is a huge difference in price, warranty bs and the other products.

In order to get a warranty from timberline you have to use their shingles plus 3 other qualified roofing products from timberline like ice and water shield, felt, starters or the caps. With all the other manufacturers there isn’t a major scam like timberlines to sell you more. For example competitor ice and water shield comes in 80 feet rolls but timberline only offers 65 feet for the same price. Caps for the competitor comes in 63 pieces in a bundle for 19.99 but timberline offers 45 pieces for 35.97. Starter strips for the competitor is 19.99 but for timberline 35.00 dollars. Also timberline shingles are way over priced than the competitors for the same warranty. Competitor offers 15 years iron-glad protection but timberline only offers 10 years. We are talking about the same lifetime warranty shingles here. Competitor offers 2 inch space to place the nails but timberline gives you a straight line to nail onto if you don’t warranty is void and it will blow of the wind storm and they will blame the contractor of course who else.

So in other words you pay more to get less with timberline while other Canadian manufacturers like IKO or CRC gives back more but you pay less. I refuse to sell or install timberline products in Ottawa, Ontario. I do not want to over charge my customers to support economy somewhere else. I am a proud Canadian and i will only sell what helps our economy grow. I love Canada and i will do my best to help our economy grow.

Winter months are a challenge for your roof and your furnace. Maintaining both can be sometimes pretty expensive. You need a furnace to keep you nice and warm. Your roof is there to keep your house nice and warm.

There are simple tests that can be done by the homeowner to determine if there is a heat loss. You can simply check the temperature in every room in your house and figure it out. If there is a heat loss in a specific section of your house it will form ice dams right above it. Sometimes when the insulation is blown into your attic proper dept may not have been met. It takes time for blown insulation to settle. Week after the insulation was blown into your attic, the dept should be checked again all around the attic and add more the low spots to have an even layer of insulation all around. Do you think your builder hired the insulation contractors to come back and make sure proper dept was applied? I really don’t think so.

Best solution for homeowner to hire a professional roofing contractor every time you buy a home to inspect your roof, your attic and all the exterior features. Most of the time paying couple of hundred dollars to a contractor is always cheaper than over working your furnace. Home inspectors a joke if you ask me when it comes to roofs. Looking at your roof across the street with a binocular is not a good sign of professionalism.

It is not a common practice to replace a roof in cold winter months but if it is needed “yes”. If there is a major issue with your roof and did not have the budget to get it done last fall, better now than before the heavy rain begins in spring.

Shingles do freeze in winter but if its kept in a worn place prior to installation, it will make a big difference. I remember re-roofing a house in december and had all the material boomed on the roof. When we started to install and couldn’t separate the sheets apart because of the cold temperature tought me a lot about replacing roofs in winter. There are lots of details that needs to be taken to a consideration when replacing a roof in winter. For example if the pressure is too high when using an air roofing gun, it will puncture the shingle and next time there is a wind storm your roof will be waving like the ocean. It is very important to have the right pressure, just enough for the nails to be flush with the surface of the shingles. Also all the ice and water shield should be heated just enough to bound to the plywood. Caulking should be applied warm on all the exposed nails and around the vents. Cold caulking does not have the stickiness to actually seal properly. Keep caulking warm in the truck prior to applying to get better results. Before the heavy rain fall your roof should be inspected for proper bondage.

Make sure to hire a professional roofing contractor who can follow these steps.Any non insured contractors who is working in your premises is the homeowners responsibility. Be aware of the fly by contractors and protect yourself and your loved ones.

I have been installing shingles and flat roof membranes for a long time and there are many different brands of roofing products out there to choose from. They are all made from the same mixture of materials. One brand can be darker than the other or other brand may have variety of colors to choose from. I personally think that it’s not the brand of the shingles that matters. If you ask why; there are many factors involved in the life span of your roof, for example underlayment, ventilated soffit, roof vents, slope of your roof, location of your house and on and on.

You can install the identical shingles on two different houses in two different locations and the one that’s less visible to sun, better ventilated and with a better pitch will last a long time to age. On the other hand if the house is right under the sun all the time, poor ventilated and has low-pitched slope on it will get fried.

Choosing a mid range color is a key when it comes to replacing your roof. Darker colors will attract the sun and life span will be shortened. Lighter colors are in the same category but opposite reaction to the sun. Sun reflects of the brighter colors and there is still a big impact on the life span of the roof. Mid range colors are always out there but they are not flirting with the sun. Sun is a player and it will burn you down as soon as you turn around.

Always inspect your soffit to make sure it is not blocked by insulation and there is a path for the fresh air to flow. Ventilation is a must, your attic should be same temperature as the outside. Make sure according to the sqf of your attic, have enough ventilation installed.

Always hire a trusted roofing company that you can depend on. Ask family or friends for advice if you don’t know any. Search on the internet for reviews and ask for references.
