Ice dams are visible all over town.

English: Ice dam forming on a slate roof near ... Cleveland, Ohio. Snow melt caused by attic heat loss and warming of slate roofing collects at roof eave to create ice dam. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I have to admit this past week was extremely crazy. My phone did not stop ringing for the past 5 days because of all the houses that got flooded because of the ice dams.   Homeowners starting to understand the importance of a good quality roof instead of a quick fixer upper. The money they saved on the roof replacement plus few more thousands to the repairs to correct the issues and maybe a new roof. Ice dams does not form on its own. It requires either direct sunlight or heat loss thru your attic to form ice dams. Proper ventilation is one of the issues. When the vents get covered by snow, it makes it harder to vent our or even does not vent out…

Commercial flat roofs are more likely to accumulate more snow and ice when it’s compared to pitched roofs. if the roof is designed with a high curb all around, it can be the main cause of the snow to park for long term rather than blow away with the wind.

Depending on the sqf of the flat roof, dept of the snow can be a real danger if you ask me. There is big difference in between powder snow and wet moist snow. It may be dry and powder right now but as soon as thaw starts the weight of the snow will multiply. We have seen in the past flat roofs collapsing due to extra weight added on by the wet snow.

It is very important to clear not all but most of it prior to thaw to avoid the structural stress and possibility of structural damage.

We offer commercial and industrial rooftop snow removal in Ottawa and region. Give us a call or send us an email regarding your questions or inquiries.

Roof snow and ice dams

Winter in Ottawa Ontario can be different every year. Because there is always freezing rain in the forecast for the capital, there will be layers of snow and ice build up on your roof. It can cause structural damage because of the weight.

There are many reasons for ice damming other than freezing rain like poor ventilation, heat loss, blocked soffit or even having a low-pitched roof. It the slope of the roof is 6/12 or less, ice and water shield must be installed under neat and both sides of  the valleys. On a 4/12 pitched roof i would recommend 9 feet of ice and water shield. If your house is facing north and south than your north side is more at risk of water damage before the south side. If you ask why; south-facing side of the house always kept warm by the sun and snow will always…

Riefa Sedum on Loggia

For some time, much of the green roofing solutions being promoted in the construction sector have been at times rather questionable as to their actual green credentials. Green roofs are frequently quoted as the saviour of our urban environment, but when faced with the reality of the broader environmental impact of the plastic trays, felt bases, and granular linings that are used in the installation process, standard green roofing does give way to some eye brow raising questions. As well-intentioned as they set out to be, standard green roofing remains flawed. The good news is that greener alternatives do exist that actually meet the expectations and ideals of the customer.

Riefa Green Roofing Solutions offers one such alternative. Riefa has been staging a revolution with a much lighter, less expensive system made from an organic and sustainable fibreboard. Once the existing roof is covered with a waterproof membrane, the
