Vinyl siding is an affordable way of making your old home loo new again. There are many different styles and colors to choose from. Best way to match colors is to choose 2 opposite tone colors to blend into each other.

If the entire home is white color siding all around, there will be no distraction of any when looking at the house. White corner pieces and beige or sand color siding will look amazing. White is the color to go for the corners and the j-trim/channels. White will expose all the corners, doors, windows etc…Metal and aluminum siding repairs are much harder to do because of the discontinued models and styles. Vinyl siding seems to be the new trend. Easy to find similar colors and styles when needs to be repaired or patched.

We are a local roofing company in Ottawa Ontario offering residential and commercial vinyl-metal-aluminum siding, soffit, fascia sales, installations, repairs and services in the cities of Nepean, Kanata, Manotick, Greely, Barrhaven, Stittsville and Orleans Ontario. Free quotes and estimates.

It’s not the shingles that go bad every so often, it’s the improper intake and exhaust system that is not performing like it supposed to. If the temperature in your attic is much different from outside, that is a perfect sign.

An attic that is not venting properly could cause many problems during summer and winter to your roof and to your pocket if you ask me. Lack of ventilation causes ice damming and condensation during winter months and it can get ugly. During summer months your attic will act like a furnace cooking the certain areas of your home. Your roof shingles are always under the sun and it is designed to expand and shrink depending on the temperature. When there is lack of ventilation that can be caused by improper intake system which is referred to your soffit that is designed to allow the fresh air to enter your attic and balance the temperature.

There are lots of older homes in Ottawa Ontario that does not have significant ventilated soffit installed to increase the fresh air flow into the attic. Majority of the older homes did not come with that feature and those homeowners replace the roof way more often than they should.

Roof vents are designed to help all the fumes, hot air from your attic to escape so that the temperature of your attic is same or similar to outside. In order for the roof vents to work properly it requires fresh air to enter from the soffit. When there is no intake/fresh air entering the attic ventilation process is very slow maybe even non. You can install as many vents as you like but it requires fresh air to create a force to complete a cycle.

During winter months it is very easy to point out which house does not have proper air circulation just by looking at the ice dams. When the snow covers the vents on your roof it suffocates your attic and that causes condensation, forces the hot air to exit from the soffit instead of the roof vent itself. Hot fumes exiting from the soffit creates a thaw action daytime and allows it to freeze overnight. After few weeks of that will give you a massive ice dam that will form along the eavestrough and it will work its way along the metal valley. It can get messy once this ice starts to melt and cause major water damage to the houses.
It is not a very big job to do but there are only certain roofing companies who will be able address that issue. Many roofing companies would want to get paid for removing ice dams instead of fixing the lack of air balance. We offer residential and commercial soffit and fascia sales, installations, repairs and services in greater Ottawa region. We also do offer free quotes and estimates to potential customers who is experiencing that types of problems.

If you have gutters installed all around your house there may be few sections around the house where the water works its way through behind the gutters. During winter months there may be ice build up as well.

When replacing a roof first layer of shingles are installed backwards to create a straight edge. Normally they are called starter strips and they stick out almost an inch from the fascia. Second row of shingle are installed right over the starter strips. Suppose of starter strips are to act as an drip-edge to allow water to run down without making contact to plywood or get behind the fascia and cause damage. If you have water dripping from your soffit, it is caused by not having starter strips or drip-edge installed properly or you have damaged shingles causing water damage.

Drip-edge is the first thing that gets installed on the fascia. Ice and water shield gets installed right over the drip edge and followed by tar/felt paper overlapping from button to top. Having a second layer of protection under neat the shingles is beneficial to every home. If wind has flipped or tore some of your shingles tar/felt paper will protect the plywood from water damage until all the necessary repairs are completed. If the water does make its way under neat the shingles it will run right into your gutter if you have any. It will slow down the process of water damage before it is corrected.

When it comes to replacing a pitched or flat roof it is highly recommended to take all the necessary steps to get the job done right.

Winter months are a challenge for your roof and your furnace. Maintaining both can be sometimes pretty expensive. You need a furnace to keep you nice and warm. Your roof is there to keep your house nice and warm.

There are simple tests that can be done by the homeowner to determine if there is a heat loss. You can simply check the temperature in every room in your house and figure it out. If there is a heat loss in a specific section of your house it will form ice dams right above it. Sometimes when the insulation is blown into your attic proper dept may not have been met. It takes time for blown insulation to settle. Week after the insulation was blown into your attic, the dept should be checked again all around the attic and add more the low spots to have an even layer of insulation all around. Do you think your builder hired the insulation contractors to come back and make sure proper dept was applied? I really don’t think so.

Best solution for homeowner to hire a professional roofing contractor every time you buy a home to inspect your roof, your attic and all the exterior features. Most of the time paying couple of hundred dollars to a contractor is always cheaper than over working your furnace. Home inspectors a joke if you ask me when it comes to roofs. Looking at your roof across the street with a binocular is not a good sign of professionalism.

I have been installing shingles and flat roof membranes for a long time and there are many different brands of roofing products out there to choose from. They are all made from the same mixture of materials. One brand can be darker than the other or other brand may have variety of colors to choose from. I personally think that it’s not the brand of the shingles that matters. If you ask why; there are many factors involved in the life span of your roof, for example underlayment, ventilated soffit, roof vents, slope of your roof, location of your house and on and on.

You can install the identical shingles on two different houses in two different locations and the one that’s less visible to sun, better ventilated and with a better pitch will last a long time to age. On the other hand if the house is right under the sun all the time, poor ventilated and has low-pitched slope on it will get fried.

Choosing a mid range color is a key when it comes to replacing your roof. Darker colors will attract the sun and life span will be shortened. Lighter colors are in the same category but opposite reaction to the sun. Sun reflects of the brighter colors and there is still a big impact on the life span of the roof. Mid range colors are always out there but they are not flirting with the sun. Sun is a player and it will burn you down as soon as you turn around.

Always inspect your soffit to make sure it is not blocked by insulation and there is a path for the fresh air to flow. Ventilation is a must, your attic should be same temperature as the outside. Make sure according to the sqf of your attic, have enough ventilation installed.

Always hire a trusted roofing company that you can depend on. Ask family or friends for advice if you don’t know any. Search on the internet for reviews and ask for references.

If you live in Ottawa and the valley you must have seen the layers of snow and freezing rain combination. Sometimes you may think there is a problem with your roof but actually it’s the unpredictable weather that we are having.

If your house is a bungalow and has more than average number of valleys on your roof, get prepared for the snow and ice build up during winter. Any house or building can have ice dams or more than average snow build up.
If you ask what causes ice dams i can explain it briefly. There are many reasons behind ice dams and it changes from house to house. If there is not enough fresh air in your attic, it can build condensation and turn into ice dams. If your vents are covered with snow and attic air is not venting out, it will help ice dams to form. If you have poor ventilation it will definitely form ice dams. Number of vents and amount of vented soffits must be balanced, if your attic is not same or close to temperature outside, it will help the ice dam. If you are not sure what it is or need an advise from a professional, contact your local Ottawa Roofers and they will be more than happy to consult you about your needs.

It is always in your best interest to maintain whats yours. You may have to do roof inspection once a year to be on the safe side. Your roof protects you and you should do the same in return and maintain it. Hire a roofing contractor to remove all the snow and ice dam off your roof before spring or you may be facing a bigger issue if there isn’t any ice and water shield or felt paper. Now days builders are saving nickles and dimes.  I have not seen one house yet with ice and water shield or felt paper all around. But that’s where i take over and do it right.
