It may be a popular brand in U.S but surely they are trying to make a big push here in the Canadian roofing industry also. Home-Depot has terminated their contract with BP shingles and switched to Timberline as of 2012.

At one point Owens Corning shingles were a top seller in U.S and it made its way to Canada, lost its clients and it’s selling power over the years. Most builders use standard 3tap 25 years shingles with all the new homes and upgrade is always available if the buyer is willing to pay. What i”m worried about is that timberline is an expensive roofing product and only way to get the proper warranty from the manufacturer is to use all of their products to go with the shingles. Ice and water shield, felt paper, starter strips, ridge caps and even ventilation. So if you decide to buy timberline shingles, you are obligated to buy whatever else is needed to get the warranty. It’s a money-making system that is designed for you to keep buying their products. Only time you will see timberline shingles on a house is when it’s a re-roof.

Most roofing companies do offer timberline roofing products but they use it as a selling point. If you are buying a new roof you want that warranty in your hands. Canadian shingle manufacturers are always on top of their game and they operate without forcing you to buy extra over priced products to get a warranty out of them. I’ve noticed the difference in weight when it comes to timberline and they weigh as much as a 25 yrs shingles while IKO or CRC shingles are thicker and they have less fiber in them.

I am a local roofing business owner here in Ottawa, Ontario and i have been installing IKO and CRC for very long time and i prefer their products without a doubt. I choose to invest my money in Canadian brands no matter who says what.

Having milder winters are good and bad if you ask me. Why is it good if you ask; first of all there isn’t a big load of snow sitting on your roof and your furnace is not working day and night to keep your house warm. A roof that is due for a replacement isn’t capable of shrinking in cold temperatures as much as a new roof. Shingles do shrink and expand when there is a change in the temperature. During summer shingles do expand and after ten or fifteen years of expanding and shrinking causes major wear and tear. If you take a closer look at your roof , you can see the lines are starting to appear more and more before the curling begins.

If you ask why the milder winters are bad for your roof; the answer is simple. The shingles are not designed to stay under the direct heat  from the sun. Winter is a good time for them to cool of but they have no break from the sun, it will eventually start to curl up and you would need to replace your roof more often.

A year ago just before the weather got warmer we faced a wind storm that damaged a lot of homes in different parts of the town. That is a perfect example for unpredictable weather. The shingles were not ready to expand and bound properly before the wind took them for a ride. For two months straight we were doing repairs in different parts of the town. Majority of the roofs were in rough shape and they should have been replaced previous year but replacing a roof can be expensive and homeowners should be prepared for the necessary repair costs.

It is highly recommended to hire a professional roofing contractor in your area to inspect your roof before and after winter. Age of the roof does not necessarily mean that it will protect you mother nature.

We offer free roofing inspections in Ottawa, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Orleans and Greely Ontario.

Where should i begin?

As we all know timberline is a brand if shingle manufacturer like iko, crc, bp, certenteed or owens corning. There is a huge difference in price, warranty bs and the other products.

In order to get a warranty from timberline you have to use their shingles plus 3 other qualified roofing products from timberline like ice and water shield, felt, starters or the caps. With all the other manufacturers there isn’t a major scam like timberlines to sell you more. For example competitor ice and water shield comes in 80 feet rolls but timberline only offers 65 feet for the same price. Caps for the competitor comes in 63 pieces in a bundle for 19.99 but timberline offers 45 pieces for 35.97. Starter strips for the competitor is 19.99 but for timberline 35.00 dollars. Also timberline shingles are way over priced than the competitors for the same warranty. Competitor offers 15 years iron-glad protection but timberline only offers 10 years. We are talking about the same lifetime warranty shingles here. Competitor offers 2 inch space to place the nails but timberline gives you a straight line to nail onto if you don’t warranty is void and it will blow of the wind storm and they will blame the contractor of course who else.

So in other words you pay more to get less with timberline while other Canadian manufacturers like IKO or CRC gives back more but you pay less. I refuse to sell or install timberline products in Ottawa, Ontario. I do not want to over charge my customers to support economy somewhere else. I am a proud Canadian and i will only sell what helps our economy grow. I love Canada and i will do my best to help our economy grow.

I have been installing shingles and flat roof membranes for a long time and there are many different brands of roofing products out there to choose from. They are all made from the same mixture of materials. One brand can be darker than the other or other brand may have variety of colors to choose from. I personally think that it’s not the brand of the shingles that matters. If you ask why; there are many factors involved in the life span of your roof, for example underlayment, ventilated soffit, roof vents, slope of your roof, location of your house and on and on.

You can install the identical shingles on two different houses in two different locations and the one that’s less visible to sun, better ventilated and with a better pitch will last a long time to age. On the other hand if the house is right under the sun all the time, poor ventilated and has low-pitched slope on it will get fried.

Choosing a mid range color is a key when it comes to replacing your roof. Darker colors will attract the sun and life span will be shortened. Lighter colors are in the same category but opposite reaction to the sun. Sun reflects of the brighter colors and there is still a big impact on the life span of the roof. Mid range colors are always out there but they are not flirting with the sun. Sun is a player and it will burn you down as soon as you turn around.

Always inspect your soffit to make sure it is not blocked by insulation and there is a path for the fresh air to flow. Ventilation is a must, your attic should be same temperature as the outside. Make sure according to the sqf of your attic, have enough ventilation installed.

Always hire a trusted roofing company that you can depend on. Ask family or friends for advice if you don’t know any. Search on the internet for reviews and ask for references.
