When temperatures linger around -5 and zero degrees Celsius, depending on the amount of snow there is on your shingles, you can see where the snow is melting.
When you set your thermostat to room temperature of 23 degrees Celsius during cold winter months, your insulation keeps the hot air stay inside. If the insulation is 30 + years old, it will become compressed and lose its R Rating. Homes that are 30 + years have serious ice dam issues due to heat loss caused by poor insulation and/or compromised vapour barrier.
Most modern homes have blown insulation in the attic, with a dept of 18 inches once its settled. To maintain your carbon print and keep your home energy efficient, it is highly recommended to upgrade insulation, roof, underlay, ice&water shield and new high flow roof ventilation.
If you spend 20k for instant on new roof, insulation ect… your heating bill will reduce by atleast 35 % and if we calculate that by 20 years, money spent on energy efficiency pays itself off in the long run.
After a rough winter the condition of your roof is determined by the amount of problems you’ve experienced during those cold winter days. It can be multiple reasons why you need to replace or repair your roof.
Typical problems during winter can be water damage, heat loss, condensation and many other reasons. It is always in your best interest to hire an honest roofing company to inspect your roof and repair if necessary. If water found a way thru your pitched and/or flat roof, you have few options; inspect the roof yourself, research on the web or request 3 quotes from local roofing companies. Be sure to understand the difference between a contractor and company. Anyone can be a contractor but it requires more than an individual to operate a registered company. It may sound to you the same thing but actually it is totally two different things. If your heating bill was extremely abnormal, this is caused by heat loss. It can be caused by all the doors and windows, insufficient amount of insulation or roof is too old. It is always in your best interest to get an opinion from a local roofing company.
Never wait for the last-minute, always be ahead of the necessary maintenance and repairs that maybe needed for your residential or commercial roof. Choosing the right roofing company is a key. You may end-up paying 10 to 20% more to a company that has too much overhead expense. As long as company is willing to provide all the necessary warranty and documentation to you on its own, you are in good hands.

It can be frustrating when the closing date is coming up and not sure if the roof will perform as it supposed to. When it comes to a structure of a house or building the most important key players are the roof and the foundation.
If the foundation is in good standing and no moisture marks or leaks it is a good sign. If there are damp sections or visible cracks, it can be a potential problem eventually. I am not sure when the building code has changed about the waterproofing membrane against the foundation walls and whipping tile systems but if your house has water proofing membrane it is a good thing. If there isn’t a waterproofing membrane against the foundation, i would have the foundation walls inspected very closely because it will cost you tens and thousands to have it repaired properly. If there are minor cracks on the inside foundation walls, that can be injected with liquid expanding epoxy and have it fixed.
The roof may look in okay shape from 30 or 40 feet but there may be cracks, lack of underlayment or ventilation, lack of insulation or even shingles that are completely bone dry. An average roof repair can cost you anywhere from 250? and up depending on the roofing company you hire. Cost of replacing a roof is determined by the difficulty level, total square footage and how many valleys and hips. Installing proper ice and water shield and sealing the entire roof with tar/felt paper is a step before installing the actual shingles. It’s not about the name or brand of the product, how it has been prepped and how the shingles has been installed is the most important.
It may be a popular brand in U.S but surely they are trying to make a big push here in the Canadianroofing industry also. Home-Depot has terminated their contract with BPshingles and switched to Timberline as of 2012.
At one point Owens Corning shingles were a top seller in U.S and it made its way to Canada, lost its clients and it’s selling power over the years. Most builders use standard 3tap 25 years shingles with all the new homes and upgrade is always available if the buyer is willing to pay. What i”m worried about is that timberline is an expensive roofing product and only way to get the proper warranty from the manufacturer is to use all of their products to go with the shingles. Ice and water shield, felt paper, starter strips, ridge caps and even ventilation. So if you decide to buy timberline shingles, you are obligated to buy whatever else is needed to get the warranty. It’s a money-making system that is designed for you to keep buying their products. Only time you will see timberline shingles on a house is when it’s a re-roof.
Most roofing companies do offer timberline roofing products but they use it as a selling point. If you are buying a new roof you want that warranty in your hands. Canadian shingle manufacturers are always on top of their game and they operate without forcing you to buy extra over priced products to get a warranty out of them. I’ve noticed the difference in weight when it comes to timberline and they weigh as much as a 25 yrs shingles while IKO or CRC shingles are thicker and they have less fiber in them.
I am a local roofing business owner here in Ottawa, Ontario and i have been installing IKO and CRC for very long time and i prefer their products without a doubt. I choose to invest my money in Canadian brands no matter who says what.
Winter months are a challenge for your roof and your furnace. Maintaining both can be sometimes pretty expensive. You need a furnace to keep you nice and warm. Your roof is there to keep your house nice and warm.
There are simple tests that can be done by the homeowner to determine if there is a heat loss. You can simply check the temperature in every room in your house and figure it out. If there is a heat loss in a specific section of your house it will form ice dams right above it. Sometimes when the insulation is blown into your attic proper dept may not have been met. It takes time for blown insulation to settle. Week after the insulation was blown into your attic, the dept should be checked again all around the attic and add more the low spots to have an even layer of insulation all around. Do you think your builder hired the insulation contractors to come back and make sure proper dept was applied? I really don’t think so.
Best solution for homeowner to hire a professional roofing contractor every time you buy a home to inspect your roof, your attic and all the exterior features. Most of the time paying couple of hundred dollars to a contractor is always cheaper than over working your furnace. Home inspectors a joke if you ask me when it comes to roofs. Looking at your roof across the street with a binocular is not a good sign of professionalism.
It is very important to have your gutters cleaned prior to every winter. If there is proper ventilation, drip edge, ice and water shield from the gutters are in place and also if the down spouts are clean you can consider yourself safe. But if there are valleys involved you might consider getting the access snow and ice removed before thaw starts.
