When temperatures linger around -5 and zero degrees Celsius, depending on the amount of snow there is on your shingles, you can see where the snow is melting.
When you set your thermostat to room temperature of 23 degrees Celsius during cold winter months, your insulation keeps the hot air stay inside. If the insulation is 30 + years old, it will become compressed and lose its R Rating. Homes that are 30 + years have serious ice dam issues due to heat loss caused by poor insulation and/or compromised vapour barrier.
Most modern homes have blown insulation in the attic, with a dept of 18 inches once its settled. To maintain your carbon print and keep your home energy efficient, it is highly recommended to upgrade insulation, roof, underlay, ice&water shield and new high flow roof ventilation.
If you spend 20k for instant on new roof, insulation ect… your heating bill will reduce by atleast 35 % and if we calculate that by 20 years, money spent on energy efficiency pays itself off in the long run.
Preventive maintenance is a scheduled service to minimize risks of having water damage caused by snow and ice accumulations on your roof.
Depending on the pitch of the roof, snow may pile up due to design of the roof trusses. When there are walls and valleys are involved, it is venerable to accumulation. Melting snow can turn into ice damming and cause water pooling on your pitched roof. If you have experienced leaks due to ice damming, it is highly recommended to do preventive maintenance on your roof.
Heat loss is another reason why the accumulation of the ice is greater when compared to neighboring houses. When there isn’t significant amount of insulation is in your attic, this can increase your heating bills dramatically. Blue staining and leaks when temperatures drow down to ZERO amd warmer are the signs of heat loss.
Having proper ventilated attic is another important factor. Your attic should be same temperature as the outside. If not there is an issue with your ventilation system. This can cause ice damming and leaks.
Commercial flat roofs are more likely to accumulate more snow and ice when it’s compared to pitched roofs. if the roof is designed with a high curb all around, it can be the main cause of the snow to park for long term rather than blow away with the wind.
Depending on the sqf of the flat roof, dept of the snow can be a real danger if you ask me. There is big difference in between powder snow and wet moist snow. It may be dry and powder right now but as soon as thaw starts the weight of the snow will multiply. We have seen in the past flat roofs collapsing due to extra weight added on by the wet snow.
It is very important to clear not all but most of it prior to thaw to avoid the structural stress and possibility of structural damage.
We offer commercial and industrial rooftop snow removal in Ottawa and region. Give us a call or send us an email regarding your questions or inquiries.
After a rough winter the condition of your roof is determined by the amount of problems you’ve experienced during those cold winter days. It can be multiple reasons why you need to replace or repair your roof.
Typical problems during winter can be water damage, heat loss, condensation and many other reasons. It is always in your best interest to hire an honest roofing company to inspect your roof and repair if necessary. If water found a way thru your pitched and/or flat roof, you have few options; inspect the roof yourself, research on the web or request 3 quotes from local roofing companies. Be sure to understand the difference between a contractor and company. Anyone can be a contractor but it requires more than an individual to operate a registered company. It may sound to you the same thing but actually it is totally two different things. If your heating bill was extremely abnormal, this is caused by heat loss. It can be caused by all the doors and windows, insufficient amount of insulation or roof is too old. It is always in your best interest to get an opinion from a local roofing company.
Never wait for the last-minute, always be ahead of the necessary maintenance and repairs that maybe needed for your residential or commercial roof. Choosing the right roofing company is a key. You may end-up paying 10 to 20% more to a company that has too much overhead expense. As long as company is willing to provide all the necessary warranty and documentation to you on its own, you are in good hands.
Request your residential and commercial roofing quotes and estimates by phone @613-255-2323 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org we will be more than happy to assist you. All estimates are free and we will work with your schedule to serve you better.
I have to admit this past week was extremely crazy. My phone did not stop ringing for the past 5 days because of all the houses that got flooded because of the ice dams.
Homeowners starting to understand the importance of a good quality roof instead of a quick fixer upper. The money they saved on the roof replacement plus few more thousands to the repairs to correct the issues and maybe a new roof. Ice dams does not form on its own. It requires either direct sunlight or heat loss thru your attic to form ice dams. Proper ventilation is one of the issues. When the vents get covered by snow, it makes it harder to vent our or even does not vent out at all. When the hot air gets trapped in your attic if will push back thru the ventilated soffit and start to form ice dams along the gutters. Hot fumes will melt the snow and turn it into ice over night. Eventually it gets bigger and wider. Whenever there is a warmer day, snow melts and it polls up behind the ice dam. It wont take a long time until you can see it dripping from your ceiling.
Here is my advise to the homeowners, don’t try to save couple of hundred dollars during replacing your roof. Make sure drip-edge is installed along all the edges. Depending on the slope of your roof have ice and water shield installed at least 6 feet from the gutters maybe more if needed. And have the rest of the roof covered with felt/tar paper or anything similar.
When we replace a roof our minimum usage of ice and water shield is 6 feet. Regardless of what the slope is, it is our company policy install 6 feet of ice and water shield and 100% felt paper and of course maximum ventilation.
There are many reasons why you should remove all the snow and ice you roof. Every year because of the heavy loads of snow and ice causes roofs to collapse. There are no warnings or indications of when and how.
If you own a house or property that is rented to a tenant it is your responsibility to make sure it is in safe condition. Your tenant may have a basic insurance coverage but you are more likely to get sued by the tenant no matter what.
We recommend that anyone in your shoes to hire an insured roofing company to control the snow and ice build up. If you think about it, it will cost you way less to pay a roofing company to perform the task than lawyer fees, payouts and the risk you will put yourself and the others. The rent money that you collect every…
We have been working in Barrhaven pretty much this whole summer and lots of roofs needs replacing. If the majority of your roof is facing south or southwest you will be replacing your roof more often.
You roof protects you, keeps you dry and keeps you cold. Poor maintenance is the biggest problem with most of the houses. A simple leak can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs. First time this season we have run into a house that has so much plywood damage it was a nightmare. Every section we removed the old shingles had water damage. Total of four guys against this one house full of surprises. It is so dangerous to walk on it because we might end up in one of the bedrooms unintentionally.
There are many steps homeowners can take to eliminate further damage caused by a leak, poor ventilation or ice damming. If your roof leaks once it will follow the same path and cause more damage in your attic. Always clean your gutters twice a year. Make sure there is proper intake and ventilation system in place to eliminate ice damming or prevent leaks.
If you live in Ottawa and the valley you must have seen the layers of snow and freezing rain combination. Sometimes you may think there is a problem with your roof but actually it’s the unpredictable weather that we are having.
If your house is a bungalow and has more than average number of valleys on your roof, get prepared for the snow and ice build up during winter. Any house or building can have ice dams or more than average snow build up.
If you ask what causes ice dams i can explain it briefly. There are many reasons behind ice dams and it changes from house to house. If there is not enough fresh air in your attic, it can build condensation and turn into ice dams. If your vents are covered with snow and attic air is not venting out, it will help ice dams to form. If you have poor ventilation it will definitely form ice dams. Number of vents and amount of vented soffits must be balanced, if your attic is not same or close to temperature outside, it will help the ice dam. If you are not sure what it is or need an advise from a professional, contact your local Ottawa Roofers and they will be more than happy to consult you about your needs.
It is always in your best interest to maintain whats yours. You may have to do roof inspection once a year to be on the safe side. Your roof protects you and you should do the same in return and maintain it. Hire a roofing contractor to remove all the snow and ice dam off your roof before spring or you may be facing a bigger issue if there isn’t any ice and water shield or felt paper. Now days builders are saving nickles and dimes. I have not seen one house yet with ice and water shield or felt paper all around. But that’s where i take over and do it right.
It is very important to have your gutters cleaned prior to every winter. If there is proper ventilation, drip edge, ice and water shield from the gutters are in place and also if the down spouts are clean you can consider yourself safe. But if there are valleys involved you might consider getting the access snow and ice removed before thaw starts.
