Eavestroughs are important features of our homes’ roof structure. But, they can pose as a source of real threat to your home if not properly taken care of.  Gutters should enjoy regular cleaning together with the downspouts to guarantee the safety of your home from various forms of damages. In case you neglect your eve troughs you may encounter.

Eavestrough and Drain Blockage

Gutters are installed in order to collect water from the roof, channeling it to the downspouts, where it is released into the backyard or the water carrying system. But, if the gutters are blocked with twigs, leaves and other debris, they will not effectively serve their purpose. Regular and thorough eavestrough cleaning will ensure the gutters as well as the downspouts a clear of any debris hence effectively performing their services.

Roof Damage

If you allow leaves and other forms of debris to build up in your trough, you will be faced with quite a huge threat on your roof. Leaves and other debris may hold on to water against the roof, hence leading to unpleasant mold growth. If it goes without discovery, it may compromise the integrity of the roofing system.

Inspections and Maintenance

Finding a good eavestrough cleaning service may also present some other benefits. Due to time and exposure to temperature and weather changes, ferrules and spikes become loose. A good service person should be able to fix them. Additionally, a good service person should carry an extensive inspection of the roof, gutters and eveastrough in order to note all the areas that require immediate repairs. This can definitely prevent a small issue turning into a major concern and costing you far much more to repair.

How do you find a good Service Technician in your city?

Finding a good and reliable service technician to take care of your troughs can sometimes be a difficult task. However, there are several communication channels through which you can find a technician of your choice. You may consider asking your friends or family whether they know any reputable technician within your locality. Also remember to ask whether there are any technicians you should avoid during your search.

You can also find a good service person online. There are numerous websites with abundant information on eavestrough technicians. On these sites, you will find different technician each ranked according to the services they offer. Carefully read through reviews of earlier clients in order to get an idea of their services. Always avoid technicians with many negative reviews. Make a list of the top rated service persons in your area and contact each for further evaluation.

Nowadays, the house repair industry is full of scammers and if you are not careful, you may end up hiring such an expert. So, always ensure the expert you are about to hire is licensed and their documents are legitimate and up to date.

During your search, do not hire the first service person you come across, always take your time to sample more. This will ensure you have a variety to choose from.

Your roof shingles are always under the sun and it is designed to expand and shrink depending on the temperature. When there is lack of ventilation that can be caused by improper intake system which is referred to your soffit that is designed to allow the fresh air to enter your attic and balance the temperature.

There are lots of older homes in Ottawa Ontario that does not have significant ventilated soffit installed to increase the fresh air flow into the attic. Majority of the older homes did not come with that feature and those homeowners replace the roof way more often than they should.

Roof vents are designed to help all the fumes, hot air from your attic to escape so that the temperature of your attic is same or similar to outside. In order for the roof vents to work properly it requires fresh air to enter from the soffit. When there is no intake/fresh air entering the attic ventilation process is very slow maybe even non. You can install as many vents as you like but it requires fresh air to create a force to complete a cycle.

During winter months it is very easy to point out which house does not have proper air circulation just by looking at the ice dams. When the snow covers the vents on your roof it suffocates your attic and that causes condensation, forces the hot air to exit from the soffit instead of the roof vent itself. Hot fumes exiting from the soffit creates a thaw action daytime and allows it to freeze overnight. After few weeks of that will give you a massive ice dam that will form along the eavestrough and it will work its way along the metal valley. It can get messy once this ice starts to melt and cause major water damage to the houses.
It is not a very big job to do but there are only certain roofing companies who will be able address that issue. Many roofing companies would want to get paid for removing ice dams instead of fixing the lack of air balance. We offer residential and commercial soffit and fascia sales, installations, repairs and services in greater Ottawa region. We also do offer free quotes and estimates to potential customers who is experiencing that types of problems.

If you have gutters installed all around your house there may be few sections around the house where the water works its way through behind the gutters. During winter months there may be ice build up as well.

When replacing a roof first layer of shingles are installed backwards to create a straight edge. Normally they are called starter strips and they stick out almost an inch from the fascia. Second row of shingle are installed right over the starter strips. Suppose of starter strips are to act as an drip-edge to allow water to run down without making contact to plywood or get behind the fascia and cause damage. If you have water dripping from your soffit, it is caused by not having starter strips or drip-edge installed properly or you have damaged shingles causing water damage.

Drip-edge is the first thing that gets installed on the fascia. Ice and water shield gets installed right over the drip edge and followed by tar/felt paper overlapping from button to top. Having a second layer of protection under neat the shingles is beneficial to every home. If wind has flipped or tore some of your shingles tar/felt paper will protect the plywood from water damage until all the necessary repairs are completed. If the water does make its way under neat the shingles it will run right into your gutter if you have any. It will slow down the process of water damage before it is corrected.

When it comes to replacing a pitched or flat roof it is highly recommended to take all the necessary steps to get the job done right.
