There are specialty tradesman and jack of all trades. I consider myself as an master roofer who is specialized in residential and commercial pitched/flat roofing services. Joe in the other hand he can do everything, this guy is unstoppable.   It is always up to the customers to decide whether to hire a professional tradesman or a jack of all trades. There are so many renovation and construction companies out there that offers A to Z home renovations and repairs. It is kind of scary if you ask me. I would never bid on a flooring job because it’s not my specialty. I would bid on a snow removal, roofing or siding job because that is part of my trade. How does a flooring contractor bid on a roofing job? When there is problems in the future with that roof, only the roofing companies look bad or get fingers pointing towards them not the flooring companies.
We are a local roofing company in Ottawa Ontario specializing in roofing, siding, waterproofing and snow removal services. We don’t install hardwood floors or service furnaces, we only do what we do best.
Always hire a master tradesman who specializes and knows the details not a jack of all trades.

Have you ever wondered why all the commercial buildings have flat roofs? The answer is easy; an average home is very small when you compare it to a flat roof, it is possible to fabricate custom roof trusses for a house but when it comes to a flat roof it is impossible. Flat roofs are designed with steel frames and support beams and the houses are made out of 2×4’s and osb/chipboards.    When the flat roofs are being constructed the builder can install drainage or scuppers to get rid of the water. Some flat roofs are designed with slope so water will always drain on its own.
There are many different types of flat roofing system that require gluing, steaming, mopping or torching. If the existing roof was tar and gravel and now it is being converted to a torch-down roofing system, the slope, drainage or scuppers must be installed or addressed to eliminate water damage that could lead to a disaster. It is normal for a flat roof to have some water pooling but not a lot. During summer months water will evaporate eventually but if it rains again back to square one.
My personal recommendation would be to re-frame a new slope for water to run off or install drainage or install scuppers. To extend the life of your flat roof you must maintain it. Clean all the drain filters, remove all the leaves and debris away from the drainage and scuppers to get water moving, remove heavy wet snow to eliminate structural damage that can be fatal.

There are many reasons why you should remove all the snow and ice you roof. Every year because of the heavy loads of snow and ice causes roofs to collapse. There are no warnings or indications of when and how.

If you own a house or property that is rented to a tenant it is your responsibility to make sure it is in safe condition. Your tenant may have a basic insurance coverage but you are more likely to get sued by the tenant no matter what.
We recommend that anyone in your shoes to hire an insured roofing company to control the snow and ice build up. If you think about it, it will cost you way less to pay a roofing company to perform the task than lawyer fees, payouts and the risk you will put yourself and the others. The rent money that you collect every month is for providing a safe place to live in. Be sure to hire an insured roofing company not a handyman express. Cheap doesn’t mean quality or safe.

We offer all types of roof snow and ice removal services for residential, commercial and industrial properties in the cities of Ottawa, Nepean, Barrhaven, Stittsville, Orleans, Manotick and Greely Ontario. Request your free quotes and estimates by phone or email and we will be more than happy to assist you with all your snow removal needs.

You may never find out if the trusses needs to be repaired unless it was pointed out to you by a home inspector if he/she really inspects the house or your roof looks bowed from outside and you have noticed it by yourself.

When providing an estimate for a customer, not too often but there are many times that I notice the sagging that was caused by broken roof truss. It becomes a conflict for me because it is not safe for me or my staff to be working on a roof that has possibility of caving in. Right away i document the problem with pictures from different angles to show it to the customer. Once the customer is aware of the problem i must inspect the attic visually and determine the exact cause and location of the problem.

It is a serious issue that may be caused by the heavy wet snow that was parked on the roof every winter, poor workmanship or bad material. It all depends on the size and shape of the house. The way it was constructed has a big part on how and why. Roof trussesare engineered and you

can’t buy them at Walmart. If there was an error during roof construction for example; too much pressure on one specific roof truss could cause it to snap, crack or crack in few years.

To prevent similar problems in the future, remove wet snow off your roof, have your roof inspected by a professional roofing company, when buying or selling a home hire a local roofing contractor to inspect the roof and the attic.

If you or someone you know is in need of roof truss repair, we can help. We offer a wide range of residential and commercial roofing, siding, foundation repairs and snow removal services.

Did somebody say winter? Yes you heard it right winter. It is that time of year cleaning the front and back yard few times until there is no more leaves left to rake.

You don’t necessarily need to be living beside a lot of trees but the wind has its own method of drifting. Cleaning around the house gives every home a fresh and clean start when the spring is knocking at the door. But before we go to fast, we need to make it thru the winter first. It takes a lot of dedication to take all the necessary steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from the cold winter days. For starters make sure your hydro and natural gas bills are paid up to date for any surprise delays during cold days. Your roof is in good shape and has been inspected by a professional roofing company. Any branch that is leaning towards your roof is a potential danger so trim it down. All the gutters are free from leaves, debris and maybe tennis balls. It may sound strange but I’ve seen it too many times. A clogged drain is a first element of a massive ice dam that could destroy your home and cost you a chunk. Make sure all the drains are functioning and water is being guided “away” from your foundation.

If you have a low-pitched roof that is facing north, be sure to keep an eye on it because it can get messy especially when the thaw begins. Roof rakes are good to have but always hire insured and experienced roofing companies to perform the risky stuff, don’t take a chance. If you notice a leak, call your local roofing company to remove all the snow and ice off the roof.

If you are located in the greater Ottawa and have a question or concern about your roof, siding, foundation or snow removal, feel free to send us an email and we will be more than happy to assist you.

One of the consequences of not cleaning the gutters is that leaves & such accumulate. This forms humus, a precursor to soil. Plants like this. We even have plants growing on our roof valleys. I need to get up there one of these days. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Lets start of with the common problems that is caused by rain when there is no gutters guiding the rain water away from your home. Normally is starts working its way along the foundation and causing cracks and damage along the foundation walls. Older home are more at risk because of the older structures did not come with waterproofing membrane  like the newer homes. Foundation cracks and shifting in the foundation are few of the problems that is caused by water damage that could have been driven away from the foundation if there was proper gutters were installed in time.

It doesn’t only cause damage to your foundation it also takes life away from your shingles if you have an upper and lower section of the roof. Metal valleys are installed along the dormers to drive the water off the roof. If the valleys are facing right over a  lower roof, chances are lower roof will age way before the main roof itself. Also it is common to see drain pipes that are installed on the lower roof was not extended and where the water was gushing caused discoloration and premature ware. It is highly recommended to extend all the drain pipes in to lower gutters to eliminate similar problem in the future.

When it comes to gutter systems there is nothing like seemless gutters. Sectional gutters are okay to but it doesn’t take very long for sectional to start dripping where the joints are. If you are planning to get gutters installed around your roof, do it right the first time.

Clean your gutters twice a year before and after winter to allow water to flow.

There was a time where I used to sub-contract work to others and took me a while to get all the deficiencies and the problems solved. I thought it was a good idea at the beginning but let me tell you; when a homeowner calls you not happy because of the performance and the bad workmanship that was displayed what would you? I went extra few miles to make all the homeowners happy and lost money out of my pocket. I was not worried about losing money, I was more worried about my reputation that was left in the hands of hill billies who just want to get paid.

It was a big lesson that made me a better business owner. I only employ roofers who cares about the quality not quantity. Finishing touches are the most important details of the product. If we have to spend extra few hours and rake the lawn, clean the gutters and inspect the roof over and over until everything is perfect. When the homeowner is happy and glad to see our company trucks in her driveway, it makes me feel proud of myself. From angry homeowners to smiling customers is a big success.

If we are performing repairs in different parts of the city I don’t need to be on every job site but if we are replacing a roof or re-roofing a portion of a roof I am always there. It is my responsibility to make sure everything is done as it was stated in the contract. Providing workmanship warranty for 10 to 15 years is a huge liability that I take on. Manufacturer warranty needs to be filled out and signed by me as well. Staying on top of my employees for insurance and workmanship purposes is part of the trade. Lesson was learned long time ago.

I refuse to sub-contract any work to protect our customer and the reputation of the company. It took lots of dedication and effort for me to bring OttawaRoofing.Net to where it is and i will continue to do so. We offer quality not quantity. If you are in need of free consultation or in need of roof repairs, we are always here to serve you.

I was in a new residential area today and what a great job builders do installing maximum vents side by side even though on the box of the vents it says  ” install minimum 8 feet apart in order to have it work properly”. Don’t worry homeowners your warranty on your new roof is only one or two years.

If 25 years shingles are only good for 10 years go after the builder not the shingle manufacturer. If 30 years shingles are only good for 15 years, go after the builder not the manufacturer. If 40 years shingles are only good for only 20 years, go after the builder not the manufacturer. Because of the installation errors and lack of ventilation homeowners say these shingles are garbage but unfortunately your builder was cheap and cared about quantity not quality. Has anyone ever bought a new home that came with a 25 years warranty??? No sh*t. If you get two years warranty out of your builder you are considered blessed.

Installing two vents side by side does not help either. When the roof vents are installed to close to each other they cancel each other out and instead of having two vents working, you only have one of them functioning. Eventually it causes hot attic air to get trapped in your attic and cook the shingles from inside. Best advise i can give any new homeowner is that hire a professional roofing company in your area to inspect your roof and point out the obvious issues or problems before the warranty runs out.

As we all know roof trusses are pre-engineered from the truss manufacturer according to the specifications that was specified by the blue-print. Framers will install all the roof trusses one by one and then sheet the whole roof with plywood. Shingles and ventilation will be installed according to the builders specifications and now we have a brand new roof.

Your attic is full of insulation and its job to keep the house warm and don’t allow any heat loss through your attic. During hot summer days your attic might get extremely hot and if the roof vents are not installed minimum 8 feet apart or there isn’t enough roof vents exhausting the attic air, it will cause the hot moist air to get trapped in your attic because of the lack of ventilation. Time being it gets so hot in your attic all the 2×4’s that is used to build your roof trusses gets twisted and they crack in the middle or became lose. Once the first 2×4 moves or shifts, it causes rest of the structure to lose stability. Plywood that is nailed on to that 2×4 caves in and problem became bigger. Also if this problem is not noticed heavy snow loads park on the roof for months also makes things worst and even cause leakage. Most of the time these problems get noticed, when the house is in the market and a good inspector actually notices it. Or next rain fall water starts to come in and when the roofing company arrives for the repairs. These types of problems are dangerous when it doesn’t get noticed and becomes a bigger issue down the road.

Always hire a professional roofing company in your area to inspect and report the condition of your roof. Insured roofing companies are always the best choice when it comes to protecting your investment and your loved ones.

We are local roofing company in Ottawa offering residential and commercial roof truss repairs and roof inspections on top of roof replacements and roof repairs. Free quotes and estimates for all your roofing related projects or problems.

Having milder winters are good and bad if you ask me. Why is it good if you ask; first of all there isn’t a big load of snow sitting on your roof and your furnace is not working day and night to keep your house warm. A roof that is due for a replacement isn’t capable of shrinking in cold temperatures as much as a new roof. Shingles do shrink and expand when there is a change in the temperature. During summer shingles do expand and after ten or fifteen years of expanding and shrinking causes major wear and tear. If you take a closer look at your roof , you can see the lines are starting to appear more and more before the curling begins.

If you ask why the milder winters are bad for your roof; the answer is simple. The shingles are not designed to stay under the direct heat  from the sun. Winter is a good time for them to cool of but they have no break from the sun, it will eventually start to curl up and you would need to replace your roof more often.

A year ago just before the weather got warmer we faced a wind storm that damaged a lot of homes in different parts of the town. That is a perfect example for unpredictable weather. The shingles were not ready to expand and bound properly before the wind took them for a ride. For two months straight we were doing repairs in different parts of the town. Majority of the roofs were in rough shape and they should have been replaced previous year but replacing a roof can be expensive and homeowners should be prepared for the necessary repair costs.

It is highly recommended to hire a professional roofing contractor in your area to inspect your roof before and after winter. Age of the roof does not necessarily mean that it will protect you mother nature.

We offer free roofing inspections in Ottawa, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Orleans and Greely Ontario.
